Dream Small
New Zealand is a complex place. It’s often seen from afar as a natural paradise and socially progressive haven, when in reality there’s some ugly truths we’d rather not talk about. And so, often, we don’t. And it’s this silence which has led to a brewing disconnect and malcontent within the next generation of New Zealanders who are realising that there might not be a way to reconcile the place they’re told they call home with the place they really live in.
This is a story rarely told but one that needs to be heard. A series of interviews with young New Zealanders who have been denied the right to dream big by a society that prefers easy lies to hard truths. Designing this was an opportunity I was proud of. The subject matter held a rough edge that was reflected with coarse texture and blurred lines, whereas the bold young voices were treated with a sense of urgency, hasty coverups, and bright colourful lights which refused to be dimmed.
